Customer Personas

Customers are complicated, and that's okay

The Problem

Roleplay activities are often used as a training tool to help salespeople improve their communication, product knowledge, and customer interaction skills. However, roleplays can feel contrived and artificial to the salespeople participating in them. Generic roleplays often lack the depth of real customer interactions. Customer interactions are unpredictable and can be complicated, and this should be accounted for in roleplay scenarios.

The Solution

By creating role-play scenarios that feature well-known characters from pop culture, I was hoping to connect with salespeople in several different ways:

  • Engagement: Pop culture characters are familiar and relatable to a wide audience. Incorporating these characters into role-play scenarios can immediately capture the participants' attention and engage them in the exercise.
  • Emotional Connection: These characters often evoke specific emotions and reactions from people. By including them in role-play scenarios, you can tap into the emotional aspects of selling, helping salespeople practice handling customers' emotions and reactions effectively.
  • Realistic Scenarios: Many pop culture characters have distinct personalities, quirks, and preferences. Integrating these traits into role-play scenarios can create more realistic and dynamic customer interactions, allowing salespeople to practice adapting their approach to different customer types, even if they’re occasionally over-the-top or under the sea.
  • Problem-Solving: Pop culture characters often face unique challenges and situations in their fictional worlds. By using these scenarios, you can challenge salespeople to think creatively and solve problems, which can be directly applicable to real-life sales situations.
  • Variety: Using a diverse range of pop culture characters allows for a variety of scenarios and customer archetypes. Salespeople can practice selling to different personality types, which is invaluable in developing their adaptability and communication skills.

The Results

This was one of my most successful training  initiatives, and was an immediate success with salespeople and their leadership. The benefits of creating these reached far beyond what was anticipated, including:

  • Memorability: Participants offered feedback that they were more likely to remember and apply the lessons learned from role-play scenarios that involved pop culture characters. These scenarios created lasting impressions and served as valuable reference points.
  • Fun While Learning: Role-play activities can often be perceived as tedious or uncomfortable. However, incorporating pop culture characters added an element of fun and enjoyment into the process, making it more enjoyable for everyone.
  • Motivation: The prospect of engaging with beloved pop culture characters motivated salespeople to actively participate and invest in the role-play activity, leading to more productive and focused training sessions. We saw more feedback from these sessions than any other activities we conducted throughout my tenure.
